Thai Student Transforms Academic Excellence into a Financial Career

For Pasinee Chariyatantiwate, the path from Thailand to The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) represented more than an academic journey—it was the first step toward building a career in one of Asia's most dynamic financial centres. After excelling in her bachelor's in quantitative finance, her decision to pursue a Master's in Accountancy at CUHK Business School would prove transformative.

The choice to study in Hong Kong came naturally. “I decided to study in Hong Kong because of its position as a financial hub with a good education system and strong reputation in the academic world,” Pasinee explains. The combination of Hong Kong's status as a global financial centre and CUHK's academic excellence, along with scholarship opportunities offered by CUHK Business School for master’s students, made it an ideal destination for her ambitions.

Finding Community in a New City

Despite being the only Thai master's student in her year, Pasinee found her community through the Thai Student Association at CUHK. “The Thai dinner gathering was probably the most memorable one where I met other juniors in the Thai student community and we shared with each other our experiences in Hong Kong,” she recalls. These gatherings became a bridge between her academic pursuits and cultural roots.

Global Perspectives, Local Connections

Her CUHK student life extended far beyond the classroom. A study trip to Japan opened new horizons in international business understanding. “During the trip, we not only had lectures from Japanese guest speakers, but we also had company visits to global corporation such as Mizuho Bank and Kao Corporation, which provided insights into how business works,” she shares. These experiences, combined with regular networking events and mentor-mentee dinners, helped shape her professional trajectory.

Building Professional Foundations

The master's programme at CUHK didn't just provide theoretical knowledge—it offered practical skills that would prove invaluable in her career. Through comprehensive coursework and hands-on experience, particularly in auditing and Microsoft Excel, Pasinee developed the expertise needed for success in her field.

The University's commitment to career development manifested in multiple ways: from regular job opening updates and internship opportunities to practical support through CV editing and mock interviews. Pasinee's role as a part-time research assistant further enhanced her analytical capabilities, demonstrating how CUHK research opportunities can complement academic studies.

“Studying for my master's degree at CUHK has had a great impact on my career as an auditor,” she notes, highlighting how the curriculum's alignment with professional qualifications like HKICPA set her up for success.

The Power of Mentorship at CUHK

For international students, having the right support can make all the difference. At CUHK Business School, Pasinee found a network that went beyond traditional academic guidance. Through mentor-mentee dinner gatherings, she connected with alumni who offered invaluable insights into both academic and professional challenges. Group lunches with programme directors and professors created informal spaces for direct mentorship, while the approachable staff ensured no question went unanswered.

“Overall, the support systems at CUHK Business School have made a significant difference in my experience and provided me with the mentorship and guidance I need as an international student,” she reflects, highlighting how these relationships shaped her journey.

A Guide for Future Students

Drawing from her experience as an international student in Hong Kong, Pasinee offers thoughtful advice for Thai students considering the CUHK’s Master of Accountancy programme. “The important thing you need to have is a goal you want to pursue in Hong Kong or interests, so that you can write your personal statement or prepare for your interview effectively,” she advises.

Her recipe for success extends beyond academics. “Apart from studying hard, you should also join as many activities as possible,” she suggests, emphasising how engagement in campus life can enhance the overall university experience. When asked about CUHK's greatest strengths, Pasinee points to three key elements: the robust academic foundation, the serene campus atmosphere, and the meaningful friendships that last well beyond graduation.

Looking Back, Moving Forward

Pasinee's story at CUHK illustrates how the right educational environment can transform career aspirations into reality. From her initial steps on campus to her current success as an auditor in an international accounting firm in Hong Kong, each experience has contributed to her professional evolution. The combination of rigorous academics, supportive community, and diverse opportunities has equipped her with more than just knowledge—it's given her the confidence and capabilities to excel in her chosen field.
